Court-Appointed Special Advocates
Kappa Alpha Theta's national philanthropy is Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), adopted in 1989. CASA helps abused and neglected children by training and funding volunteers to represent these children in court and stay with them until they find the children a permanent home. CASA currently has over 900 programs in operation and nearly 70,000 community volunteers. Click here to learn more about National Kappa Alpha Theta's partnership with CASA.
MIT Kappa Alpha Theta and CASA
This year, MIT Kappa AlphA Theta presents the third annual KATwalk. The past two years we have raised nearly $6000 for CASA. In past years, we have raised between $2000 and $3000 for CASA through our previous event, Playstation - an event centered around video games, consoles, sponsors, raffles, and food items.
Beyond our annual major event, we hold smaller events sporadically as well to raise money for CASA. At the end of the spring 2006 semester, for example, a quickly thrown-together "Send Your Friend a Care Package" fundraiser ended up raising over $800 for CASA within a week.
As a result, we've achieved recognition on both the MIT and national Kappa Alpha Theta level: we received the Outstanding Community Involvement and James R. Killian, Jr. Community Service awards from MIT last spring, and awards for Excellence in Signature Philanthropy Event and recognition as a Top Ten chapter in CASA donations 2004-2006 at the summer Kappa Alpha Theta national Grand Convention.
